Doom: The Dark Ages – A Medieval Twist on Classic Gameplay

EDGE magazine recently revealed exciting new details about Doom: The Dark Ages, highlighting a shift towards narrative-driven gameplay within expansive levels. Game director Hugo Martin and studio head Marty Stratton shed light on several key features:

Unlike previous installments where lore was primarily delivered through text, The Dark Ages will feature a more direct storytelling approach. The game's aesthetic will embrace a medieval setting, minimizing futuristic elements and redesigning iconic weapons to match the new era.

While retaining the series' signature level-based structure, Doom: The Dark Ages will boast the largest levels yet, seamlessly blending dungeon crawling with open-world exploration. Levels are structured into "acts," progressing from confined dungeons to vast, explorable areas. Unique to this iteration is the ability to control both a dragon and a mech, diversifying gameplay options.

A groundbreaking addition to the Slayer's arsenal is a versatile shield that functions as a throwable chainsaw. Its interaction with different materials (flesh, armor, energy shields, etc.) will vary, adding strategic depth. The shield also facilitates a dash attack for rapid traversal, compensating for the absence of double jumps and roars from previous games. Furthermore, a parry mechanic, adjustable in difficulty, provides skillful players with tactical advantages.

Parrying seamlessly reloads melee attacks, while successful melee combat replenishes ammunition for ranged weapons, echoing the chainsaw mechanic in DOOM Eternal. Players can choose from a fast gauntlet, balanced shield, or slower mace, each offering distinct melee combat styles.
