Microsoft to Integrate Copilot AI into Xbox App and Games

Author:Kristen Update:May 21,2025

Microsoft is set to enhance your Xbox gaming experience with the integration of its AI tool, Copilot, as part of its broader initiative to incorporate artificial intelligence across its products. The AI Copilot, which replaced Cortana in 2023 and is already integrated into Windows, will soon be available for Xbox Insiders to test via the Xbox mobile app. This gaming-focused version of Copilot will offer several features at launch, including the ability to install games remotely, provide insights into your play history, track achievements, and suggest new games to play. Additionally, you can interact with Copilot directly through the Xbox app while playing, receiving answers in a manner similar to its functionality on Windows.

One of the highlighted features of Copilot for gaming is its role as a gaming assistant. Currently, you can ask Copilot on PC for help with game-related questions, such as strategies to defeat bosses or solve puzzles, and it will pull information from various online resources like guides, wikis, and forums. Soon, this capability will extend to the Xbox app as well. Microsoft is committed to ensuring the accuracy of the information Copilot provides by collaborating with game studios, ensuring that the data reflects the original vision of the games and directing players back to the sources of the information.

Looking ahead, Microsoft has ambitious plans for Copilot in gaming. During a press briefing, the company discussed potential future uses, including serving as a walkthrough assistant to explain basic game functions, helping players remember where items were left, and suggesting where to find new ones. Copilot could also offer real-time strategy tips in competitive games, helping players counter their opponents' moves and understand game engagements. While these ideas are still in the conceptual stage, Microsoft's presentation made it clear that they are determined to deeply integrate Copilot into the Xbox gaming experience. The company also confirmed plans to collaborate with both first-party and third-party studios to enhance game integration.

Regarding user privacy and control, Microsoft has stated that during the preview phase on mobile, Xbox Insiders can choose how and when they interact with Copilot for Gaming, including whether it has access to their conversation history and what actions it can perform on their behalf. Microsoft emphasized its commitment to transparency about data collection, usage, and user choices regarding personal data. However, the company left open the possibility that Copilot might become mandatory in the future.

Beyond player-focused applications, Microsoft is also exploring how Copilot can benefit game developers. The company plans to discuss these initiatives at the Game Developers Conference, indicating a comprehensive approach to integrating AI across the gaming ecosystem.
