Starfield Drops Gore, Dismemberment

Author:Kristen Update:Dec 25,2025

Bethesda initially intended to incorporate gore and dismemberment gameplay elements into Starfield, but technical constraints ultimately forced their removal.

Dennis Mejillones, a former character artist who worked on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, explained to Kiwi Talkz that space suit complexities made the feature unworkable.

"The technical challenges posed by various space suit designs became overwhelming," he noted. "Each suit required specific dismemberment considerations - helmets needed precise cutting points, severed limbs required flesh caps, and so on."

"We developed systems to handle these mechanics, but they created an unsustainable web of dependencies. The evolving character creation options exacerbated these issues, especially with intricate helmet designs featuring hoses and adjustable body proportions."

While some players expressed disappointment about Starfield lacking Fallout 4's signature gore mechanics, Mejillones argued these fit Fallout's darkly comedic tone better: "That visceral violence complements Fallout's quirky humor - it's foundational to the experience."

Since its September 2023 launch, Starfield has attracted over 15 million players despite initial critiques. Our 7/10 review acknowledged its undeniable RPG appeal: "While facing numerous challenges, Starfield's compelling quests and refined combat ultimately prove irresistibly immersive."

Recent developer disclosures revealed unexpected technical hurdles, particularly Neon City's extensive loading sequences. Post-launch updates have addressed performance issues, introducing a 60fps mode, with the Shattered Space expansion releasing this September.
