Elden Ring: Nightreign Skips Key Feature

Summary

  • Unlike its predecessor, Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system.
  • FromSoftware cites a lack of time for players to read and write messages in Nightreign's faster-paced gameplay as the reason for this omission.
  • Nightreign will retain and enhance other asynchronous features from Elden Ring.

Elden Ring Nightreign will not allow players to leave messages for each other, a senior FromSoftware official has confirmed. This decision to remove the signature feature is attributed to practical considerations.

The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware games, has fostered significant player engagement. Whether used for helpful guidance, playful misdirection, or humorous commentary, these messages have become an integral part of the Soulsborne experience for many players.

However, this popular feature will be absent in Elden Ring Nightreign. Game director Junya Ishizaki, in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan, explained that the game's multiplayer-focused design and shorter play sessions clash with the messaging system. Nightreign's anticipated shorter play sessions of approximately 40 minutes each wouldn't allow sufficient time for players to effectively utilize written messages.

Nightreign Retains Other Asynchronous Features

While Elden Ring sessions often extend for hours, Nightreign is designed for shorter, more intense bursts of gameplay. This shift in pacing led to the removal of the messaging system to maintain a streamlined experience.

This doesn't mean all asynchronous functionality is gone. Key community features, such as the bloodstain mechanic, will return, enhanced to allow players to not only see how others perished but also loot their fallen counterparts.

FromSoftware Aims for a 'Compressed' RPG Experience

The removal of the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's vision for a more intense, multiplayer-focused experience in Nightreign. The game's three-day structure also contributes to this goal. Ishizaki described the aim as creating "a compressed RPG" with high variety and minimal downtime.

Elden Ring Nightreign's reveal trailer at The Game Awards 2024 targeted a 2025 release, though a precise date remains unannounced.
