Shadow of the Colossus Film Gets New Update

Update on the Shadow of the Colossus Movie Adaptation

Director Andy Muschietti recently offered an update on the long-awaited film adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus, assuring fans the project is not dead. While development began over a decade ago (Sony announced it in 2009, with Fumito Ueda, the game's director, involved), the director cited budgetary concerns and the complexities of adapting such a popular and unique IP as reasons for the delay. He confirmed multiple scripts exist, and he has a personal favorite.

This update comes amidst Sony's recent announcement of several other video game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers movie, a Horizon Zero Dawn film, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated project.

Muschietti, known for his work on It and The Flash, emphasized that the Shadow of the Colossus adaptation is not abandoned. He acknowledged the game's enduring popularity and the significant budget required to faithfully recreate its scale and atmosphere. He clarified that while he's not a hardcore gamer, he considers the game a "masterpiece" and has played it multiple times.

The game's influence is evident in other titles, such as Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2 (2024), which shares a similar tone and features colossal enemies. However, Sony's original remains a beloved classic. Muschietti's involvement and the ongoing development suggest that the film aims to capture the essence of Ueda's vision, hopefully appealing to both existing fans and newcomers. This is especially noteworthy given the release of high-definition remakes in 2018 and the recent announcement of a new game from Ueda's studio, GenDesign, at The Game Awards 2024, further highlighting the enduring legacy of Shadow of the Colossus.
