GTA Online Might Survive After GTA 6's Launch

Take-Two Will Support GTA Online if There's Demand

Curious about the fate of GTA Online once GTA 6 hits the shelves? While Rockstar Games hasn't given a definitive answer, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, shed some light on the matter during an IGN interview on February 14, 2025.

Zelnick refrained from commenting on specific titles without an official announcement but offered a compelling analogy. "I'm going to speak theoretically only because I'm not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn't been made," Zelnick stated. "But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles."

He highlighted the example of NBA 2K Online, launched in China in 2012, followed by its sequel in 2017. Despite the sequel's release, Zelnick noted they "did not sunset Online 1," as both games maintained substantial player bases in China. Furthermore, Zelnick emphasized, "So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them."

Given these statements, it seems likely that Rockstar and Take-Two will continue to support GTA Online as long as there is a dedicated player base, even after the launch of GTA 6. Considering GTA Online's status as a financial powerhouse for over a decade, it would be unwise to abandon such a lucrative title.

Rockstar Games May Create a Platform like Roblox and Fortnite for GTA 6

In exciting news for GTA fans, Rockstar is reportedly developing an online version for GTA 6 that incorporates user-generated content (UGC), as reported by Digiday on February 17, 2025. This move would make GTA 6's online experience akin to that of Roblox and Fortnite.

Digiday's report suggests that "Rockstar Games has been in discussions with top Roblox and Fortnite creators, as well as dedicated GTA content creators, about the potential to create custom experiences inside the upcoming game." This would empower players to modify the game's assets and environments, and even introduce their own creations, fostering a dynamic visual sandbox.

This strategy not only promises to expose GTA 6 to a broader audience through content creators and modders but also offers Rockstar and Take-Two an opportunity to generate additional revenue through "virtual item sales or through revenue programs." Although Digiday reached out to Rockstar Games for comment, the company has yet to respond.

Despite its age, GTA 5 and its online component remain the third most-watched game on Twitch. By integrating modders and content creators into GTA 6's online version, the game is poised to create significant excitement across various platforms.
