On April 13, Bungie unveiled a gameplay reveal showcase for Marathon, marking a significant shift from the series' roots. Unlike the original trilogy released between 1994 and 1996, which were single-player focused, the new Marathon centers on multiplayer dynamics. Players will join six teams of three, competing against each other and AI-controlled enemies to secure and extract valuable loot.

In a PlayStation.blog post dated April 12, Bungie elaborated on their vision for the game. Despite the shift to multiplayer, Marathon Narrative Leader Jonathan Goff emphasized maintaining the experiential storytelling that has defined Bungie's games. "The interweaving of narratives, events, and characters in the original trilogy delivered a world of discovery, wonder, and misdirection," Goff stated. He added, "Our goal with Marathon is not just to tell a story, but to build worlds where stories can naturally unfold."

Making Marathon a "Story Engine"

During the reveal stream, it became clear that Marathon places a strong emphasis on in-game economics, with every item having a sell price and clear indicators of what can be extracted. However, Bungie clarified that accumulating wealth isn't the game's sole focus. Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler told PC Gamer that the game aims to be a "story engine," generating memorable experiences even from failures. "Some of the best survival stories and moments I've had in gaming are actually failures or weird things that have happened," Ziegler explained, emphasizing that the game's success isn't just measured by survivability but by the stories players create during their runs.

Working With Fans and Creators

Bungie has actively involved fans and content creators in Marathon's development from the early stages. Feedback from these playtests led to significant changes, such as addressing issues with map fairness and predictability. "After hearing this feedback, we moved to the design we have today, where each match is a fresh start for everyone," Ziegler noted. This approach allows teams to strategize better and race against others for coveted loot.

Bungie is set to launch a closed alpha playtest for Marathon from April 23 to May 4, but this is restricted to players in the U.S. and Canada. Participants can choose from four unique Runners: Blackbird, similar to Destiny 2's Warlock; Void, with tactical invisibility; Locus, featuring a tactical shield; and Glitch, known for its great mobility. The alpha will feature three maps: Perimeter, a woodland setting for five crews (15 players), and Dire Marsh, a more open map for six crews (18 players).
