Contrary to recent speculation, *Marathon* will not follow the free-to-play model and will instead launch as a premium title. Bungie has clarified its stance on monetization and also addressed one of the more anticipated features—proximity chat—revealing why it won't be included at launch. Below are the latest updates straight from the developer.
During a live gameplay showcase held on April 13, Bungie confirmed *Marathon*’s release date and unveiled a new gameplay trailer. The event also served as an opportunity to officially dispel rumors that the game would adopt a free-to-play model. Instead, Joe Ziegler, Director of *Marathon*, made it clear in a follow-up episode of the Friends Per Second podcast that the game is being developed as a premium experience.
"We’re hoping that what we’re showing is exciting enough that someone is going to take the leap with us, but we are also committed to delivering on seasons past this that will continuously offer to evolve the game without an increase to the box price."
Ziegler expressed confidence in the current direction of the game, emphasizing that the team is focused on creating a polished and enjoyable experience. While pricing details have not yet been disclosed, Bungie has stated via Twitter (X) that *Marathon* will not be a full-priced AAA title but rather a premium offering. More information regarding its final cost will be revealed this summer.
Despite the rising popularity of proximity chat in multiplayer games, Bungie has decided not to include the feature in *Marathon*. In an interview with PC Gamer, Ziegler explained that while the concept of proximity chat isn’t inherently flawed, the potential for toxicity remains a major concern.
"When it comes to prox chat, I don't think we're against the experience of it, to be fair. I think the challenge is how to make sure we're creating a safe environment for players inside of that space."
The development team acknowledges the social benefits of proximity chat, especially in an extraction-based shooter where tactical communication can enhance gameplay. However, without a reliable system to prevent abuse and harassment, Bungie has opted to exclude the feature for now.
Ziegler reiterated that while the idea of including proximity chat is appealing, finding a secure and scalable solution remains a challenge—not just for Bungie, but across the gaming industry. "I think that's where we stand right now. Like, if it was magical and we could somehow come up with that solution, I think we totally would do it. But right now, it is a challenge that many companies are trying to figure out."
*Marathon* is scheduled for release on September 23, 2025, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. As more details about pricing, post-launch content, and future features become available, Bungie promises to keep the community informed through official channels.
