Bethesda Clarifies: No Remake Planned for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Author:Kristen Update:May 17,2025

Bethesda Game Studios has clarified why Virtuos' newly released "The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered" is not considered a remake. In a detailed post on X/Twitter, the studio explained their reasoning behind labeling it as a remaster rather than a remake. They emphasized that they never intended to remake the game but instead aimed to remaster it, enhancing the original experience with today's technology while preserving the core essence of the game as players remember it.

The clarification comes as fans are getting their first official look at and hands-on experience with "Oblivion Remastered." The game, which is now available, features significant visual upgrades and some gameplay enhancements, such as the ability to sprint and a new level-up system that blends elements from both the original "Oblivion" and "The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim."

Despite numerous tweaks and changes, which some players feel make it more akin to a remake, Bethesda insists on calling it a remaster. They started working on this project in 2021 and have focused on upgrading every aspect of the game without altering its fundamental nature. "It's still a game from a previous era and should feel like one," Bethesda stated, highlighting their commitment to maintaining the original feel of "Oblivion."

The studio expressed gratitude towards both long-time fans and newcomers to the series, hoping that everyone who steps out of the Imperial sewer feels like they are experiencing "Oblivion" for the first time. "The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered" is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. For those interested, a comprehensive guide is available, featuring an interactive map, complete walkthroughs for main and guild quests, character building tips, and more.

Bethesda Game Studios concluded their message with a heartfelt thank you to their community, underscoring the importance of the support they've received over the years.
