The upcoming fantasy adventure game Avowed from Obsidian Entertainment is set to launch in 2025, promising a deeply immersive experience. Game director Carrie Patel has provided an in-depth look into the game's intricate gameplay and its commitment to meaningful roleplay, where every choice players make will significantly impact the entire game.

Avowed Packs In Complex Gameplay and Multiple Endings

Vying For Political Control in The Living Lands Is As Complex As It Gets

In Avowed, players are offered "moment-to-moment opportunities to express and explore where they're leaning," according to Patel. Speaking to Game Developer, she emphasized that the game is designed to create a comprehensive experience where every decision, whether big or small, matters. "It's about giving the player moment-to-moment opportunities to express and explore where they're leaning," Patel stated. She added, "You slow down and try to notice each moment of your experience," encouraging players to reflect on their emotional engagement with the game, asking themselves, "When am I excited? When am I curious? When is my attention starting to wane? What's drawing me from moment to moment?"

The choices and outcomes in Avowed hinge on the player's exploration of Eora, particularly in the region known as The Living Lands, where political control is at stake. "I've enjoyed finding the stories that thread both of those worlds together," Patel noted, highlighting the interconnected narratives.

Avowed Has “Meaningful Roleplay” As The Choices You Make Affect Entire Game

Players will assume the role of an envoy from the Aedyran Empire, tasked with solving the mystery of a spiritual plague while navigating their political ambitions. Patel stressed the importance of meaningful roleplay, saying, "Giving players things to dig into—that's what makes it meaningful roleplay. It's about who you want to be in this world, and how these situations prepare you to express that."

Beyond its complex RPG mechanics, Avowed promises strategic combat that combines magic, swords, and guns. Patel explained, "The abilities you can scope into and the weapon loadouts you can choose give you a very different experience each time you play."

In an interview with IGN, Patel confirmed that Avowed will feature multiple endings with "a lot of different combinations." She stated, "I can tell you our ending slides number in the double digits, and you can end up with a lot of different combinations of them." Patel concluded, "This is an Obsidian game, so your ending really is the sum total of your choices across the game, across a lot of pieces of content depending on what you encountered and what you did when you found it."
