SAG-AFTRA's Strike Against Video Game Giants: A Fight for AI Protections
SAG-AFTRA, the actors' and broadcasters' union, initiated a strike against major video game companies on July 26th, 2024, targeting industry leaders like Activision, Electronic Arts, and others. This action, following protracted negotiations, centers on crucial concerns regarding the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) and ensuring fair compensation for performers.
The core dispute revolves around the unchecked proliferation of AI in video game production. While not inherently opposed to AI technology, SAG-AFTRA members express deep apprehension about its potential to replace human actors. Key concerns include the unauthorized replication of actors' voices and likenesses using AI, and the displacement of performers, particularly those in smaller roles crucial for career development. The union also highlights ethical considerations surrounding AI-generated content that may not reflect an actor's personal values.
Addressing the complexities arising from AI and other industry challenges, SAG-AFTRA has developed new agreements. The Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement (I-IMA) offers a tiered framework based on game production budgets, providing tailored rates and terms for projects ranging from $250,000 to $30 million. This agreement, established in February, incorporates AI protections initially rejected by the video game industry bargaining group. A notable side deal with AI voice company Replica Studios allows union actors to license digital voice replicas under specific terms, including the right to opt out of perpetual use.
Further mitigating the impact of the strike, SAG-AFTRA introduced the Interim Interactive Media Agreement and the Interim Interactive Localization Agreement. These provide temporary solutions addressing crucial aspects including compensation, AI usage, rest periods, and other key employment conditions. Importantly, these agreements exclude expansion packs and downloadable content, allowing for continued work on approved projects during the strike.
Negotiations, initiated in October 2022, culminated in a 98.32% strike authorization vote by SAG-AFTRA members in September 2023. Despite some progress, the lack of enforceable AI protections remains the primary obstacle. Union leadership emphasizes the video game industry's substantial profits and the vital contribution of SAG-AFTRA members in bringing game characters to life. They are resolute in their demand for fair treatment and AI safeguards in this rapidly evolving industry landscape. The strike underscores the union's commitment to protecting its members' rights and ensuring ethical AI practices within the video game industry.
