Nvidia has officially detailed the custom GPU powering the Nintendo Switch 2, though without diving as deeply as tech enthusiasts might have hoped.
A blog post from Nvidia confirmed earlier reports by IGN, revealing that the new GPU supports AI upscaling through DLSS and real-time ray tracing.
DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) leverages AI and machine learning to enhance lower-resolution images on-the-fly, improving both visual fidelity and gaming performance.
The blog provided additional technical insight, describing the Switch 2's GPU as a "custom Nvidia processor equipped with dedicated RT Cores and Tensor Cores for advanced visuals and AI-powered enhancements."
Nvidia further emphasized: "With over 1,000 engineer-years of development invested across hardware architecture, custom GPU design, and developer tools, the Nintendo Switch 2 represents a generational leap."
Key upgrades include 4K resolution in docked mode and up to 120Hz refresh rates at 1080p for handheld play, alongside HDR support and AI-powered image sharpening technologies.
The inclusion of RT Cores enables sophisticated ray-traced lighting effects, creating "more realistic reflections, shadows, and illumination for immersive gameplay."
Tensor Cores drive DLSS and other AI features, "dynamically enhancing image clarity while maintaining performance efficiency."
Interestingly, Nvidia revealed these Tensor Cores also facilitate facial recognition and background processing for video calls, "improving social gaming and streaming experiences."
During Nintendo's presentation, the company showcased new chat functionality using a dedicated C button, microphone array, and external camera—with advanced noise suppression technology prioritizing player voices.
Nvidia made bold performance claims:
"Delivering ten times the graphical power of the original Switch, the Nintendo Switch 2 offers significantly smoother frame rates and sharper visuals."
While specific benchmarks weren't disclosed, tech analysts like Digital Foundry will likely conduct thorough performance evaluations when the console launches this June.

The blog noted Tensor Cores "optimize AI-accelerated graphics while minimizing power draw," with RT Cores "enhancing realism through dynamic lighting effects."
Nvidia's G-SYNC technology enables Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) in handheld mode, "eliminating screen tearing for ultra-smooth gameplay."
At a recent hardware briefing attended by IGN, Nintendo confirmed DLSS implementation without specifying version details or custom modifications—maintaining similar ambiguity regarding ray tracing capabilities.
Regarding technical specifics, Nintendo's Tetsuya Sasaki explained:
"We prioritize delivering consumer value over discussing hardware specifications, though Nvidia may share additional technical details."
A recently surfaced patent (originally filed July 2023) outlines AI-powered texture compression technology that could enable 4K assets while minimizing game file sizes for cartridge distribution.
