Lies of P dev explains difficulty tweaks for wider appeal

Author:Kristen Update:Oct 06,2025

The upcoming Lies of P DLC "Overture" will introduce difficulty options for the first time in this challenging Soulslike title.

As a Soulslike game, Lies of P delivers punishing difficulty—something that may deter players drawn primarily by its dark story and setting. Initially, director Jiwon Choi stated the team believed Soulslike games shouldn't include difficulty settings, launching the base game without any adjustments.

Now, Neowiz has reconsidered this stance, confirming the change followed careful consideration of player feedback.

"We wanted to ensure a broader audience could enjoy the game," Choi told VGC. "Customer and developer feedback shaped our decision to introduce difficulty options, allowing different types of players to experience Lies of P in ways that suit them."

The announcement has sparked debate among players, with some questioning Choi's reversal. One commenter noted: "It's easier to dismiss difficulty adjustments until negative reviews pile up and discussions constantly highlight accessibility barriers."

"As someone who started gaming later in life, I appreciate easier settings," shared another player. "I adore Lies of P but struggle mechanically—having options means more people can enjoy this incredible world."

"Souls purists oppose difficulty sliders because elitism fuels their validation," added a supporter of the change. "I'm glad Lies of P prioritizes inclusivity over gatekeeping."

However, detractors remain vocal across Steam forums and social media. One critic wrote: "Between nerfs and difficulty modes, my excitement vanished. Stop dumbing down games." Notably, most replies defended Neowiz's decision.

Another lamented: "Neowiz sacrificed artistic integrity for mass appeal." A thread titled "Difficulty settings = Dealbreaker" appeared alongside a post from an actual player describing the unmodified game as "brutally unfair."

Lies of P reimagines Pinocchio's tale through a dark, challenging action-RPG lens, featuring a dynamic "lie" system where choices alter gameplay. The Overture DLC expands this world with new zones, enemies, bosses, characters, and weapons. It also adds Death March mode—a boss rush challenge for seasoned players. Completing the DLC takes 15-20 hours and unlocks after reaching a specific story milestone. Neowiz has already confirmed a full sequel is in development.

In our 8/10 review, we praised Lies of P as "an exceptionally crafted Soulslike that honors its inspirations while carving its own identity."
