11 bit studios has exciting news for fans of the Frostpunk series, announcing Frostpunk 1886, a much-anticipated remake of the original game, slated for release in 2027. This announcement comes just over six months following the launch of Frostpunk 2, and nearly a decade after the first Frostpunk game debuted in 2018.

For this ambitious project, 11 bit studios is harnessing the power of Unreal Engine 5, moving away from their proprietary Liquid Engine, which powered both the original Frostpunk and This War of Mine. The decision to switch engines reflects the studio's commitment to enhancing the Frostpunk experience, enabling new features and capabilities that were previously out of reach.

Frostpunk is renowned for its unique setting in an alternate history late 19th century, where players are tasked with building and maintaining a city amidst a global volcanic winter. The game challenges players to manage resources, make critical survival decisions, and explore the harsh environment beyond their city for additional survivors, resources, and essential items.

IGN's review of the original Frostpunk awarded it a commendable 9/10, praising it as an "engaging and unique, if occasionally unintuitive, strategy game" that skillfully blends various thematic and gameplay elements. Frostpunk 2, while receiving a slightly lower score of 8/10, was recognized for its expansive redesign of the ice-age city builder mechanics, offering a more socially and politically complex experience, albeit less intimate than its predecessor.

Despite the focus on the new project, 11 bit studios remains dedicated to supporting Frostpunk 2 with free major content updates, a console launch, and additional DLC. The studio's vision for Frostpunk 1886 is not merely to enhance the visuals but to significantly expand the game's content, introduce new mechanics, laws, and an entirely new Purpose path, ensuring a fresh and engaging experience even for veteran players.

The move to Unreal Engine 5 also paves the way for long-awaited mod support, fulfilling a key community request that was unfeasible with the original engine. Furthermore, this shift positions Frostpunk 1886 as a living, expandable platform, with the potential for future DLC content.

11 bit studios envisions a future where Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 evolve in tandem, each offering unique paths in the relentless struggle for survival in the cold. Alongside these projects, the studio is also preparing for the release of The Alters in June, keeping fans eagerly awaiting more from this innovative developer.
