Ex-Bethesda Dev Foresees Fallout 3 Remaster Gunplay Upgrade

Author:Kristen Update:Oct 03,2025

Following the successful reception of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, fans are eagerly speculating which Bethesda title will receive the remaster treatment next. With strong rumors suggesting Fallout 3 (leaked in 2023) could be the contender, the question arises: how might Bethesda enhance its iconic 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG?

Bruce Nesmith, a key designer behind Fallout 3, has openly acknowledged the game's underwhelming gunplay—a weakness he believes Bethesda would substantially address in a potential remaster.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith predicted Fallout 3 Remastered would adopt Fallout 4's refined shooting mechanics.

"Fallout 4's improvements reveal what Bethesda deemed essential upgrades from Fallout 3," Nesmith explained.

"Significant effort went into overhauling Fallout 4's gunplay because Fallout 3 was their first attempt at shooter-style combat. The results speak for themselves."

The Oblivion Remaster—developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5—boasts sweeping visual and gameplay enhancements. Beyond expected 4K/60fps performance, it revolutionizes leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and UI. New dialogue, polished third-person perspective, and advanced lip-sync technology have led some fans to argue it's effectively a remake. Bethesda has clarified its decision to pursue a remaster approach.

Nesmith anticipates Fallout 3 Remastered would follow Oblivion's precedent for meaningful upgrades.

"Fallout 3's combat didn't match contemporary shooters," he noted. "Being an RPG-shooter hybrid presented unique challenges, but Fallout 4 made tremendous strides. I'd expect similar improvements."

"The Oblivion Remaster isn't merely Skyrim-ized—it surpasses Skyrim's visual benchmarks," Nesmith continued, praising it as "Oblivion 2.0."

Bethesda maintains a packed schedule with The Elder Scrolls VI development, potential Starfield expansions, Fallout 76 updates, and the upcoming Fallout TV show's New Vegas-themed second season—promising exciting years ahead for fans.
