Xbox Game Pass Price Hikes and New Tier Announced: Expanding Reach, Increasing Costs
Microsoft has announced price increases for its Xbox Game Pass subscription service, introducing a new tier while simultaneously raising prices across the board. This move reflects Xbox's broader strategy to expand Game Pass's reach across various platforms, even as it adjusts its pricing model.
Price Changes Effective July 10th (New Subscribers) and September 12th (Existing Subscribers):
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: Increases from $16.99 to $19.99 per month. This top tier retains its comprehensive features: PC Game Pass, Day One games, back catalog, online play, and cloud gaming.
PC Game Pass: Rises from $9.99 to $11.99 per month, maintaining access to Day One releases, member discounts, the PC game catalog, and EA Play.
Game Pass Core: Annual price jumps from $59.99 to $74.99 ($9.99 monthly).
Game Pass for Console: Will be discontinued for new subscribers starting July 10, 2024. Existing subscribers can maintain access unless their subscription lapses. After September 18th, 2024, the maximum stackable time for console subscriptions will be 13 months.
New Xbox Game Pass Standard Tier:
Microsoft is introducing Xbox Game Pass Standard, priced at $14.99 per month. This tier offers a back catalog of games and online play but excludes Day One releases and cloud gaming. More details on its launch date and game availability are forthcoming.
Xbox's Expanding Strategy:
Microsoft's stated goal is to provide players with more choices in how they access and play games. This includes offering diverse pricing plans and expanding Game Pass's availability beyond traditional Xbox consoles. Recent marketing campaigns highlight Game Pass's accessibility on platforms like Amazon Fire Sticks, emphasizing that an Xbox console isn't required to play.
Commitment to Hardware and Physical Games:
Despite its push into digital subscriptions, Microsoft has confirmed its ongoing commitment to hardware manufacturing and physical game releases. While acknowledging challenges related to manufacturing costs, Xbox executives have stated that abandoning physical games is not a strategic goal.
