Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms
Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche import title for PS Vita enthusiasts. The announcement of a global release for Gundam Breaker 4 in 2024 was a huge surprise, and having logged 60 hours across various platforms, I can confidently say it's a mostly fantastic entry, albeit with a few minor flaws.
This release is significant not just for the game itself, but for its accessibility. Gone are the days of importing Asia English releases; Gundam Breaker 4 boasts dual audio (English and Japanese) and multiple subtitle options (EFIGS and more). Let's explore the game's strengths and weaknesses across different platforms.
The story, while serviceable, isn't the main attraction. While the early dialogue can feel a bit protracted, the latter half delivers interesting character reveals and more engaging conversations. Newcomers will be brought up to speed, although the significance of certain characters might be lost without prior experience in the series.
The true draw is the unparalleled Gunpla customization. Beyond adjusting individual parts (arms, legs, weapons), you can fine-tune part size and scale, even mixing standard and SD (super deformed) parts for truly unique creations. Builder parts add further customization options, many with unique skills. EX and OP skills, dependent on parts and weapons, add strategic depth, further enhanced by ability cartridges providing buffs and debuffs.
Missions reward parts and materials for upgrading and increasing part rarity, unlocking additional skills. The game's difficulty is well-balanced; grinding isn't necessary on standard difficulty, although higher difficulties and optional quests (including a fun survival mode) provide additional challenges and rewards.
Beyond combat, extensive paint, decal, and weathering options cater to Gunpla enthusiasts. The gameplay itself is highly enjoyable, with varied combat and satisfying skill combinations. Boss fights involve targeting weak points and overcoming various challenges. While one specific boss fight proved tricky due to AI behavior, the overall combat is engaging and rarely repetitive.
Visually, the game is a mixed bag. Environments can feel somewhat lacking early on, but the Gunpla models and animations are stunning. The art style isn't realistic, but it's effective and performs well even on lower-end hardware. The music is a bit inconsistent, with some forgettable tracks and a few standouts. The voice acting, however, is surprisingly good in both English and Japanese.
Minor issues include a slightly annoying mission type (though thankfully infrequent) and a few bugs. Online functionality wasn't fully testable pre-launch, but will be updated once online play is available. The PC version, in particular, shines on Steam Deck, offering excellent performance and control options.
The PC port supports over 60fps, unlike the PS5 (capped at 60fps) and Switch (around 30fps) versions. It also offers mouse and keyboard support alongside controller options, with automatic prompt switching. Minor controller reconnection issues were noted. The graphics settings are comprehensive, allowing for fine-tuning of visual fidelity and performance.
On Steam Deck, the game runs exceptionally well, achieving 60fps+ even at high settings. Minor visual glitches related to fonts and menu clarity were observed. The Switch version, while portable, suffers from performance issues, particularly in the assembly section and diorama mode.
The PS5 version offers superior visuals and performance, although the 60fps cap is somewhat disappointing. The Switch version lacks detail and suffers from lower resolution and draw distance compared to the PS5 version. Loading times are significantly longer on Switch than on PS5 or Steam Deck.
The Ultimate Edition offers additional DLC, including parts and diorama content. The story DLC wasn't available for review, but early unlocks are not game-changing. The Diorama mode, however, is a highlight, offering excellent tools for Gunpla posing and photography.
While the story is enjoyable, the game's core strength lies in its customization, combat, and Gunpla building. If you're looking for a story-driven experience, other titles might be better suited.
Overall, Gundam Breaker 4 is a spectacular addition to the series. It's a highly enjoyable experience, especially on PC and PS5, with minor drawbacks on Switch. The extensive customization and engaging gameplay make it a must-have for Gunpla fans and action game enthusiasts alike.
