Oblivion Remake Details Leak Online

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 09,2025

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remake, rumored to be in development and slated for a 2025 release, has sparked excitement with an alleged leak of project details. According to Mp1st, these details surfaced due to an accidental release by a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio. Microsoft has not provided any comments on the matter when approached by IGN.

Virtuos is reportedly using Unreal Engine 5 to completely remake Bethesda's iconic open-world RPG, suggesting a comprehensive overhaul rather than a simple remaster. The leak, as per Mp1st, includes significant gameplay changes such as modifications to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the heads-up display (HUD).

The changes to Blocking are said to be inspired by action games and Soulslikes, aiming to address the original system's perceived "boring" and "frustrating" nature. Sneak icons are now reportedly highlighted, with revamped damage calculations. The effect of depleting Stamina leading to a knockdown is supposedly harder to trigger. The HUD has been redesigned for better clarity, hit reactions have been added for more responsive gameplay, and Archery has been modernized for both first and third-person views.

Rumors of an Oblivion remaster first surfaced in 2023, following the leak of documents from the FTC versus Microsoft trial concerning the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. These documents, compiled in July 2020 before Microsoft's purchase of ZeniMax Media in March 2021, listed several unannounced Bethesda projects, including an "Oblivion Remaster" planned for the 2022 financial year. Other projects mentioned included an Indiana Jones game, Doom Year Zero with DLC, Project Kestrel, Project Platinum, The Elder Scrolls 6, a Fallout 3 Remaster, a Ghostwire: Tokyo sequel, Dishonored 3, and additional DLC for Doom Year Zero.

However, many of these projects faced delays or cancellations. Doom Year Zero evolved into Doom: The Dark Ages, set to launch this year, while Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was released in December 2024. The Elder Scrolls 6 did not meet its projected timeline for the 2024 financial year.

The term "remaster" used in the Microsoft document for Oblivion suggests a less ambitious project than the current rumors of a full remake. It's possible that the scope of the project expanded over time, leading to the development of a more extensive remake. The gaming community eagerly awaits official confirmation from Bethesda.

Regarding platform availability, Microsoft's current strategy favors multiplatform releases. With the anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, the Oblivion remake might extend beyond PC, Xbox, and PlayStation to include the new Nintendo console. Leaker NateTheHate has suggested a June release for the Oblivion remake, which could align with the rumored launch window of the Switch 2.

Next week, Microsoft will host an Xbox Developer Direct where id Software, owned by ZeniMax, will provide more details on Doom: The Dark Ages. Microsoft has also hinted at revealing a new game from a mystery developer, though it's unlikely to be the Oblivion remake. According to Windows Central's Jez Corden, this new game is expected to be a fresh installment in a renowned Japanese franchise with a long history, promising to delight many fans.
