Visions of Mana Director Leaves NetEase for Square Enix

Visions of Mana Director, Ryosuke Yoshida, Makes the Move to Square Enix

This surprising news broke on December 2nd via Yoshida's Twitter (X) announcement: he's leaving NetEase and joining Square Enix. Details surrounding his departure from Ouka Studios remain scarce.

Yoshida's Future at Square Enix: A Mystery

A prominent figure in the development of Visions of Mana, Yoshida, a former Capcom game designer, played a key role in bringing this latest Mana installment to life. Collaborating with teams from Capcom and Bandai Namco, the team successfully launched the game on August 30, 2024, boasting upgraded graphics and a fresh take on the series. His transition to Square Enix is confirmed, but his specific projects or role remain undisclosed.

NetEase's Shift in Japanese Investment Strategy

Yoshida's departure isn't entirely unexpected, given NetEase's reported scaling back of investments in Japanese studios. A Bloomberg article from August 30th highlighted NetEase and Tencent's decision to curtail losses following several successful but ultimately less profitable ventures through Japanese partnerships. Ouka Studios, Yoshida's former employer, is directly impacted, with NetEase significantly downsizing its Tokyo workforce.

Both NetEase and Tencent are refocusing their resources on the revitalized Chinese gaming market, a shift exemplified by the success of Black Myth: Wukong, a recent award-winner at the 2024 Golden Joystick Awards (Best Visual Design and Ultimate Game of the Year).

This strategic realignment contrasts with the companies' 2020 approach, where they heavily invested in the Japanese market amidst a period of stagnation in China. However, tensions appear to have emerged between these large entertainment corporations and smaller Japanese developers, differing perspectives on global market expansion versus IP control likely contributing to the shift.

While NetEase and Tencent aren't abandoning Japan entirely—their established relationships with Capcom and Bandai Namco remain—they're adopting a more cautious strategy, minimizing losses and preparing for the anticipated growth within the Chinese gaming industry.
