Fallout Developers Express Interest in a New Game, But Creative Freedom is Key

Several key figures in the Fallout franchise, including Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, have voiced their enthusiasm for developing a new entry. However, a crucial condition has been attached: the opportunity to explore fresh creative avenues.

The Need for Novelty

In a recent YouTube Q&A, Sawyer stated his willingness to helm another Fallout title, but only if given sufficient creative leeway. He emphasized the importance of defining project boundaries and the scope of creative freedom allowed. Without the ability to explore innovative concepts, the project loses its appeal. He succinctly stated, "If those constraints are just really constraining then it’s not appealing...who wants to work on something where the one thing they want to explore is not possible?"

This sentiment is echoed by other developers. Last year, Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky expressed interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster, but, similar to Sawyer, their participation hinges on the potential for innovation. Cain highlighted the need for a fresh approach, stating, "Every RPG I've ever made offered me something new and different...If someone came to me and said, 'You want to make a Fallout game?' My answer is 'Well, what's new?'"

Obsidian's Perspective

Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart also shared his desire to work on another Fallout game, should the opportunity arise. However, in a January 2023 interview with Game Pressure, he confirmed that no such project was currently underway, citing Obsidian's busy schedule with titles like Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2. While he expressed hope for a future Fallout project before retirement, he acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding its timing.
