Four-lane Map Becomes Three Lanes

Deadlock's latest major update streamlines its map from four lanes to three, aiming to simplify gameplay and enhance other features. On February 26, 2025, Valve shared comprehensive details on Steam about the map rework and adjustments to other game mechanics.

The redesign features a reduction from four to three lanes, accompanied by "a broad spectrum of map-wide changes including visuals, building layouts, pathways, neutral camps, air vents, breakables, powerup buffs, juke spots, and the mid boss." Deadlock, already unique in the MOBA genre with its third-person perspective, hopes this change will streamline the gameplay that was potentially complicated by the additional lane.

Moreover, the update introduces changes to farming mechanics, where players no longer need to last-hit enemies to summon Soul Orbs, easing the early laning phase. The patch notes also promise improvements in the game's netcode and client performance.

A Vital Update for Deadlock

This update could be the key to revitalizing Deadlock's community and boosting player engagement. In September 2024, the game reached an all-time high with 171,490 active players. However, player numbers have since dropped by 90%, with only about 17,000 players active last month.

Valve Developer Yoshi addressed the community in January 2025 via Deadlock's Discord server, explaining a shift in the update schedule. He noted, "Moving forward, major patches will not adhere to a fixed schedule. These updates will be more substantial but less frequent, with hotfixes released as necessary. We are excited to continue enhancing the game throughout the new year."
