Assassin’s Creed Shadows Hits 3 Million Players, Ubisoft Yet to Reveal Sales Data

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 31,2025

Ubisoft has announced that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has surpassed 3 million players just seven days after its launch on May 20. This impressive milestone marks a significant increase from the 2 million players reported on the game's second day, outpacing the launches of both Origins and Odyssey. Ubisoft highlighted these statistics in an internal email, noting that Shadows' performance should be compared to Origins and Odyssey rather than the exceptional launch of Valhalla in 2020.

Shadows achieved the second highest day one sales revenue in the Assassin's Creed franchise, trailing only behind Valhalla. It also became the biggest Ubisoft day one launch on the PlayStation Store and has accumulated over 40 million hours of playtime to date.

The success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is crucial for Ubisoft, especially following a challenging period marked by delays, the commercial underperformance of Star Wars Outlaws, and a series of high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations. The pressure on Shadows is immense, as Ubisoft's founding Guillemot family reportedly explored buyout talks with Tencent and other investors to safeguard the company's intellectual property. Consequently, the gaming industry is closely monitoring Shadows' performance as an indicator of Ubisoft's future.

On Steam, Assassin’s Creed Shadows set a new record for the series by achieving a peak of 64,825 concurrent players over the weekend. This was the first Assassin's Creed game to launch on Steam since Odyssey in 2018. In comparison, BioWare's Dragon Age: The Veilguard reached a peak of 89,418 players on the platform.

While Assassin’s Creed Shadows has garnered significant player engagement, it's challenging to determine if it meets Ubisoft's expectations without specific revenue or sales figures. Ultimately, the financial performance of Shadows will be a key determinant of Ubisoft's future trajectory, with more clarity expected in the company's upcoming financial reports.
