"Water Decks Gain New Power with Pokemon TCG Pocket's Triumphant Light Expansion"

Author:Kristen Update:May 05,2025

When Pokemon TCG Pocket first launched, the meta was quickly dominated by a select few decks, with one centered around Misty and water-type Pokemon becoming particularly notorious. The deck's early game dominance, heavily reliant on coin flips, frustrated many players due to its luck-based nature.

Despite three expansions since the game's launch, the meta hasn't shifted as expected. Instead of new cards countering or replacing Misty decks, the latest expansion, Triumphant Light, has introduced a card that amplifies their strength, leading to widespread player frustration.

The issue isn't that Misty decks are the most powerful in the game, but rather that losing to them can feel deeply unsatisfying due to their reliance on chance. Misty, a Supporter card, allows players to flip coins until they land on tails, attaching a water-type energy to a chosen water-type Pokemon for every heads flipped. This mechanic can lead to wildly varying outcomes—from attaching zero energy to a game-changing number, enabling turn-one victories or powering up strong cards before opponents can react.

Subsequent expansions have only made Misty decks more formidable. Mythical Island introduced Vaporeon, which can redistribute the bonus energy among water-type Pokemon. Space-Time Smackdown added Manaphy, further increasing water energy on the board. Both expansions also brought powerful water-type Pokemon like Palkia ex and Gyarados ex, cementing water decks' dominance.

The Triumphant Light expansion introduces Irida, another Supporter card that can heal 40 damage from each Pokemon with water-type energy attached. This new card allows water decks to stage comebacks, leveraging the energy amassed through Misty, Manaphy, and Vaporeon. While some experts suggest Irida might force players to make tough deck-building decisions, many have found ways to incorporate both cards effectively.

As Pokemon TCG Pocket approaches a scheduled event where players can earn rewards like a gold profile badge for winning five consecutive matches, water decks are expected to be prevalent. The challenge of achieving such win streaks is heightened by the potential for these decks to dominate early and recover from setbacks with cards like Irida. Given the current meta, players might consider adopting water decks themselves to stay competitive.
