SteamOS Debuts on Non-Valve System

Lenovo's Legion Go S: The First Third-Party SteamOS Handheld

Lenovo has partnered with Valve to bring SteamOS to its upcoming Legion Go S gaming handheld, marking the first third-party device to utilize this operating system. Previously exclusive to the Steam Deck, this expansion broadens SteamOS accessibility.

The Legion Go S, launching in May 2025 for $499, offers a compelling alternative to Windows-based handhelds. Unlike Windows, which can be less optimized for portable devices, SteamOS provides a smoother, console-like experience. This version will feature 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

A Windows 11 version of the Legion Go S will also be available, launching earlier in January 2025. This version will offer configurations of 16GB RAM/1TB storage ($599) and 32GB RAM/1TB storage ($729). While the flagship Legion Go 2 currently lacks a SteamOS option, future availability depends on consumer demand for the Legion Go S SteamOS version.

Valve's commitment extends beyond the Legion Go S. A public SteamOS beta will soon be released for other handheld gaming PCs, opening the door for broader adoption. This move signifies a significant step in expanding SteamOS's reach and providing gamers with more choices in handheld gaming. Valve assures full feature parity and identical software updates for all SteamOS devices, excluding hardware-specific adjustments. Currently, Lenovo holds the exclusive license for a SteamOS-powered handheld from Valve.
