Sony to Remove PS4 Games from PlayStation Plus in 2024

Sony has announced significant changes to its PlayStation Plus service, marking a strategic shift towards the PlayStation 5. Starting in January 2026, PlayStation 4 games will no longer be a staple of the PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog. Instead, Sony will focus exclusively on PlayStation 5 titles. This transition was detailed in a recent PlayStation Blog post, alongside the reveal of February 2025's monthly titles.

According to Sony, "As we shift to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog." This change will not impact the PS4 games that subscribers have already claimed through the service. However, any PS4 titles currently in the Games Catalog will remain playable until they are rotated out as part of the monthly refresh.

Sony is committed to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience, promising to "continue to evolve the experience of PlayStation Plus and optimize the benefits you receive, including exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, online game save storage, and more." As the company shifts its focus to the PS5, it plans to introduce new PS5 titles monthly for subscribers to enjoy.

The PlayStation 4, launched in 2013, paved the way for the PlayStation 5, which followed in 2020. With over a decade since the PS4's debut and more than four years since the PS5's release, Sony has noted that "many of our players are currently playing on PS5 and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles."

It remains uncertain whether Sony will reassign PS4 games to the Classics Catalog, which currently houses ports and remasters of games from the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3. Sony is expected to provide more details on this as the transition date approaches.
