Rebel Wolves, a studio comprised of former CD Projekt Red developers, unveiled their debut title, The Blood of Dawnwalker, with a cinematic trailer. The trailer, a blend of pre-rendered sequences and brief gameplay glimpses, showcases the game's dark fantasy setting and its similarities to The Witcher.
The Blood of Dawnwalker, initially announced as Dawnwalker in January 2024, is a narrative-driven open-world RPG. Its reveal stream on January 13, 2025, hosted by Rebel Wolves and Bandai Namco, culminated in a four-and-a-half-minute cinematic trailer. This trailer introduces Coen, the protagonist, who becomes a Dawnwalker—essentially, a powerful vampire—at the game's outset. The trailer also establishes the game's world and the Dawnwalkers themselves.
Witcher-esque Gameplay and Moral Choices
The Blood of Dawnwalker shares significant similarities with The Witcher series. Its dark fantasy setting, monsters, morally gray choices, and the tagline "the world needs what it fears" strongly evoke the Witcher experience. Players will face difficult decisions, mirroring the choices in The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine, as Coen struggles to balance his Dawnwalker powers with his humanity. A robust morality system allows for multiple approaches to saving his family.
Persona-Inspired Time Management
Beyond its Witcher-like foundation, The Blood of Dawnwalker incorporates unique gameplay mechanics. Inspired by Persona, the game features a time management system. Every quest consumes time, creating a "narrative sandbox" where players must prioritize their actions. Completing every quest in a single playthrough is impossible, encouraging replayability and diverse experiences. As Rebel Wolves co-founder and game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz stated, "There are multiple approaches to saving Coen’s family with no clear division between main and side quests; you decide on how you spend the time."
Development and Release
Currently in development for PC and current-gen consoles (PlayStation and Xbox), The Blood of Dawnwalker is planned as the first installment of a trilogy. Published by Bandai Namco, the game's release date remains unannounced, though a 2027 release or later seems likely given its AAA budget and 2022 development start. A gameplay reveal is promised for Summer 2025.
