Outer Worlds 2 Development Update: Smooth Sailing Despite ChallengesObsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart recently provided a positive update on the development of The Outer Worlds 2, assuring fans that progress is strong despite past hurdles. This update comes alongside news about their other projects, including the fantasy RPG Avowed.

Obsidian's Confidence in Upcoming Releases

Urquhart, in an interview with Limit Break Network, confirmed that The Outer Worlds 2 is "going really well." He praised the dedicated team, many of whom worked on the original title, expressing confidence in their ability to deliver a high-quality sequel.

He candidly acknowledged the challenges faced by the studio, particularly the difficulties navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and the integration following Microsoft's acquisition. Simultaneously developing multiple titles, including Grounded and Pentiment, significantly strained resources. Urquhart admitted a period of "crappy development," even mentioning internal discussions about potentially halting The Outer Worlds 2 to focus solely on Avowed. However, the studio persevered, continuing development across all projects.

Obsidian's Multi-Title Development ChallengesUrquhart recounted the pressures of the period: "We got acquired [in 2018], and we were figuring out how to be acquired, and then Covid happens, and we're trying to get Outer Worlds done, and we're trying to get the DLC done, and we're trying to move Avowed forward, and we want to start again on Outer Worlds 2, get Outer Worlds 2 moving, and Grounded moving, and Josh is working on Pentiment."

Despite these setbacks, Urquhart highlighted the successful launches of Grounded and Pentiment, and the promising progress on Avowed, describing The Outer Worlds 2 as "looking incredible." While specific game details remain undisclosed, the recent delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential timeline adjustments for other Obsidian projects.

Positive Outlook for The Outer Worlds 2Announced in 2021, The Outer Worlds 2 has seen limited updates since. Urquhart acknowledged the possibility of a launch date shift, mirroring the situation with Avowed. However, he reaffirmed Obsidian's commitment to delivering exceptional games, stating, "We will get there with all these games...But we’re going to get there, and I think that’s been proven now." Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are slated for release on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
