LEGO Lord of the Rings: Building the Shire, Start of Epic Quest

Author:Kristen Update:May 01,2025

LEGO is set to enchant fans once again with the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Shire on April 2 for LEGO Insiders and April 5 for the general public. This marks the third Lord of the Rings set to be launched in the last three years, following the impressive 6,167-piece Rivendell in 2023 and the monumental 5,471-piece Barad-dûr in 2024. The new addition, a 2,017-piece rendition of The Shire, promises a charming and detailed build experience, though it comes with a price tag that might raise eyebrows.

The LEGO LOTR: The Shire set captures the essence of Bilbo Baggins' hobbit-hole, complete with nine minifigures including Bilbo, Frodo, Mrs. Proudfoot, Farmer Proudfoot, Merry, Pippin, Rosie Cotton, Samwise Gamgee, and Gandalf the Grey. The set meticulously recreates the cozy atmosphere of Bag End, with its rounded walls and curved surfaces adorned with various accessories. From patterned rugs and letters to food items like cheese and bread, every detail adds to the homey feel. The set also includes artifacts from Bilbo's adventures, such as the Mithril Coat and a map that guided Thorin and Company to the Lonely Mountain.

Set #10354 invites builders to recreate Bilbo's home as seen on his "eleventy-first" birthday. The design cleverly cuts away the back of the hillside to reveal three distinct rooms: the main foyer, a study, and a dining and sitting area. These rooms are assembled separately and connected using clamps, creating a seamless exterior and a continuous living space inside. The set includes a unique mechanical feature using LEGO Technic, allowing builders to switch the fireplace display between a charred envelope and the One Ring, recreating a pivotal scene from The Fellowship of the Ring.

The construction process is straightforward, with the interior rooms being easier to build than the exterior, which demands more attention to achieve the natural curves of the hillside. The tactile experience of building the set evokes the feeling of a real landscape, with varying slopes and textures. The set also includes several standalone elements that enhance storytelling, such as a birthday cake, Party Tree with lanterns, a tent, a dragon firework, Gandalf's carriage, and a disappearing mechanism for Bilbo.

Despite its charm and simplicity, which align well with the hobbit lifestyle, the LEGO Shire set is also disproportionately expensive for its piece count. At 2,017 pieces, priced at $270, it falls 34% above the traditional 10 cents per brick pricing metric. In comparison, the larger and more complex Rivendell and Barad-dûr sets offer better value per piece. Even LEGO Star Wars sets, known for their higher prices due to licensing, don't typically exceed this margin.

Ironically, this set remains the most affordable option for Lord of the Rings fans who couldn't justify buying Rivendell or Barad-dûr. However, the pricing raises questions about the sustainability of LEGO's strategy, given the set's relative simplicity. Whether the beloved Lord of the Rings theme and LEGO's brand loyalty can support this pricing will be a topic of interest among fans.

For those eager to see The Shire in action, LEGO has also released a mini-movie of the set:

PlayLEGO The Lord of the Rings: The Shire, Set #10354, retails for $269.99, and it is composed of 2,017 pieces. It is available at the LEGO Store beginning on April 2 for LEGO Insiders and on April 5 for the general public.
