Kojima Plans Movie Directing After Physint

Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear spiritual successor, Physint, remains roughly "five or six years" from launch.

This timeline comes directly from Kojima himself during an interview with Le Film Francais, where he explained his filmmaking ambitions are on pause until completing his first "action espionage" title since his highly publicized departure from Konami in 2015.

"Since leaving Konami, I've received numerous serious offers to develop games through my independent studio," Kojima explained (translated by ResetEra user Red Kong XIX). "Alongside Death Stranding 2, we're actively developing Physint - a project requiring another five to six years."

"Perhaps then I could finally pursue directing," the visionary creator added. "Cinema shaped my childhood. Filmmaking would be my ultimate tribute. Also, I'm not getting any younger - better to attempt this while I still can!"

PlayPlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst first revealed Physint in January 2024, though updates have been scarce since. Notably, Kojima initially suggested it would function as both game and film, but later clarified on X/Twitter that it represents "next-level 'Digital Entertainment'" blending cinematic-quality "look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, sound."

The project joins Kojima Productions' busy slate including Death Stranding 2 and OD - their Xbox Game Studios collaboration featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Kojima simultaneously oversees development of A24's Death Stranding film adaptation.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach launches June 26, with franchise star Norman Reedus recently confirming to IGN he'd "of course" reprise his role in the movie adaptation.

Following revelations about abandoned game concepts - including a 'Forgetting Game' where skills deteriorate with player inactivity - Kojima recently disclosed leaving his team a USB drive containing future game ideas for posthumous development.
