A Seamless Open World
Monster Hunter Wilds departs from the series' traditional mission-based structure, offering a truly seamless open world for exploration and hunting. In a recent Summer Game Fest interview, producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, executive director Kaname Fujioka, and director Yuya Tokuda discussed this revolutionary shift. The focus is on fluid gameplay and an immersive environment that reacts directly to player actions. Hunters explore an uncharted region, encountering new wildlife and resources, but with the freedom to choose their targets and approach without the constraints of timed missions.
Fujioka emphasized the importance of seamless gameplay: "The seamlessness of the game is a core design element. We aimed for detailed, immersive ecosystems requiring a seamless world filled with freely huntable monsters."
A Dynamic and Living World
The game boasts a remarkably dynamic world, featuring diverse biomes, desert settlements, and a rich cast of NPC hunters. Monster behavior is intricately designed, with packs of monsters pursuing prey and interacting with human hunters in a realistic manner. Fujioka highlighted the 24-hour behavior patterns of these characters, contributing to a more organic and engaging experience.
Tokuda explained the technological advancements that made this dynamic world possible: "Creating a massive, evolving ecosystem with numerous monsters and interactive characters was a significant challenge. Simultaneous environmental changes – something previously unattainable – are now a reality." This includes real-time weather effects and fluctuating monster populations.
Building on Global Success
The success of Monster Hunter World significantly informed the development of Wilds. Tsujimoto emphasized the impact of a global perspective: "Our global approach to Monster Hunter World, including simultaneous worldwide release and comprehensive localization, shaped Wilds' development. We considered players unfamiliar with the series and how to draw them in." This global mindset promises to make Monster Hunter Wilds accessible and engaging to a broader audience.
