Persona and Metaphor: ReFantazio Composer’s New Turn-Based JRPG Gets A Free Steam Demo

Get ready for an exciting sneak peek into the world of Guns Undarkness as it gears up to release a free demo at the upcoming Steam Next Fest. Spearheading this project is none other than Shoji Meguro, the renowned composer behind the Persona series and Metaphor: ReFantazio. Joining him are the talented Ghost in the Shell Character Artist Ilya Kuvshino and the iconic rapper Lotus Juice, best known for his contributions to Persona 3.

Shoji Meguro, who has been a stalwart at Atlus since 1995, has crafted the unforgettable soundtracks for classics like the Shin Megami Tensei series and the Persona series. In 2021, Meguro ventured into indie game development while still collaborating with Atlus on their music. Post-departure, he has been hard at work on Guns Undarkness, a Sci-Fi Stealth Action JRPG set to be published under Kodansha Game Creators Lab.

First unveiled at Indie Live Expo Winter 2021, Guns Undarkness successfully launched a Kickstarter campaign in 2022, hitting all its stretch goals. Mark your calendars for February 24, 2025, when the free demo becomes available at Steam Next Fest, with the game slated for early access release later in the year.

According to its Steam page, Guns Undarkness is a "turn-based tactical JRPG inspired by games like Metal Gear Solid and Persona." Set in the year 2045, the game plunges players into a world teetering on the edge of destruction. As a member of a private military company, your mission is to undertake perilous assignments with your allies and unravel the mysteries threatening humanity.

The gameplay in Guns Undarkness splits into two primary modes: stealth and battle. During stealth sections, players can navigate the environment undetected, gaining a strategic edge in combat when engaging enemies silently. Combat is turn-based, where players command their characters and utilize various firearms to secure victory.

The upcoming demo for Guns Undarkness will offer approximately 20 minutes of gameplay, encompassing a tutorial on basic controls, the battle system, weapons, and strategic elements during the game's initial stages. The game is scheduled for an Early Access release in Spring 2025, promising around 10 hours of playtime on PC. While no specific release date has been announced yet, anticipation is building for this innovative JRPG.
