Cardinals Watch Conclave for Future Clues

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 18,2026

Edward Berger's gripping papal thriller Conclave captivated audiences last year, revealing a rarely seen aspect of Catholicism: the ceremonial election of a new pope. As cardinals worldwide prepare for an actual conclave, the film's influence becomes evident—several participating religious leaders have reportedly turned to the movie for procedural guidance.

Speaking to political outlet Politico, a Vatican official involved in conclave proceedings confirmed that Berger's film—featuring Ralph Fiennes as the dean of the College of Cardinals—has been deemed "surprisingly accurate even by seasoned cardinals." The source added that "some [cardinals] have seen it in theaters."

The passing of Pope Francis in late April, mere months after the film's release, set the conclave process in motion. Starting May 7, 133 senior clergy members will gather in Rome's Sistine Chapel to deliberate and select the next global leader of Catholicism.

Most participants, handpicked by Pope Francis himself, are experiencing the conclave for the first time. For cardinals from smaller, remote dioceses, the film serves as an accessible primer on traditions they might otherwise struggle to fully grasp.
