Le thriller papal captivant d'Edward Berger, Conclave, a fasciné le public l'année dernière, révélant un aspect rarement vu du catholicisme : l'élection cérémonielle d'un nouveau pape. Alors que les cardinaux du monde entier se préparent pour un véritable conclave, l'influence du film devient évidente — plusieurs leaders religieux participants se seraient tournés vers le film pour des conseils procéduraux.

S'exprimant auprès du média politique Politico, un officiel du Vatican impliqué dans les procédures du conclave a confirmé que le film de Berger — mettant en scène Ralph Fiennes dans le rôle du doyen du Collège des cardinaux — a été jugé "étonnamment précis, même par des cardinaux chevronnés." La source a ajouté que "certains [cardinaux] l'ont vu au cinéma."

Le décès du pape François fin avril, seulement quelques mois après la sortie du film, a mis en marche le processus du conclave. À partir du 7 mai, 133 membres du haut clergé se réuniront dans la chapelle Sixtine à Rome pour délibérer et choisir le prochain leader mondial du catholicisme.
