The director of The Witcher 4, Sebastian Kalemba, has put to rest any speculation that the game's developers altered Ciri's appearance following fan feedback. Recently, CD Projekt released a behind-the-scenes video showcasing the cinematic reveal trailer for The Witcher 4, which included two close-up clips of Ciri at the 2:11 and 5:47 marks. These clips sparked discussions among fans who noticed a slight variation in Ciri's facial features compared to her look in the main trailer. Some fans praised the new appearance, with one commenting that Ciri at the 5:47 mark was a "perfect representation of a slightly older Ciri," expressing their satisfaction with her updated look.
Despite some initial concerns that Ciri's appearance in the reveal trailer was met with negative feedback, leading to potential changes, Kalemba clarified on social media that no modifications were made to Ciri's in-game model. He explained that the behind-the-scenes footage was a "snapshot" of the raw, in-engine model before the application of cinematic enhancements such as facial animation, lighting, and virtual camera lenses. This raw footage, he noted, is a natural part of the game development process where character appearances can vary across different mediums.
The Witcher 4 marks the beginning of a new trilogy set after the events of The Witcher 3, with Ciri taking the lead role instead of Geralt. In an exclusive interview with IGN, executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga emphasized that choosing Ciri as the protagonist was a "very organic, logical choice," highlighting her depth and significance in the original saga. Kalemba added that Ciri's younger age allows for greater player freedom in shaping her character, offering the developers more creative space to explore her story.
Both Mitręga and Kalemba acknowledged potential backlash regarding Ciri's role but affirmed that she was always intended to be the main character. Kalemba stressed that the decision was deliberate and not random, driven by Ciri's compelling narrative and the challenges she faces, which provide ample material for an epic saga.
In a separate interview with IGN about Netflix's upcoming animated film, The Witcher: Sirens of The Deep, Geralt's voice actor Doug Cockle expressed his excitement about The Witcher 4's direction. He supported the shift to Ciri as the protagonist, citing the potential for an engaging continuation of the saga based on developments in the books.
