The Witcher 4 Breakdown: How Ciri’s Combat Style Differs from Geralt’s

In The Witcher 4, a significant shift is underway: Ciri replaces Geralt as the protagonist, sparking much anticipation about how this will reshape gameplay, especially the combat system. CD Projekt RED recently offered a glimpse into these changes during a podcast episode.

The developers highlighted a trailer scene showcasing Ciri battling a monster using a chain—a stylish callback to The Witcher 1. But it's not just the chain; Ciri's fighting style is markedly different. Her approach is described as fluid and acrobatic, a stark contrast to Geralt's more grounded style.

The developers explained the difference: "There was this one scene where we see the chain, which is a tribute to The Witcher 1. When she grabs the monster’s head with it and pins it to the ground, she also performs an additional flip, which was really cool because you can’t imagine Geralt doing something like that. He’s very… I’d say he’s agile, but he’s also very… he feels almost like a ‘block’ in a way—he’s bulky and heavy. And she [Ciri] is just… she’s practically like liquid compared to [Geralt]."

This comparison perfectly encapsulates the contrast. Geralt’s combat relies on strength and precise strikes, while Ciri’s is faster, more dynamic, and infused with her inherent agility. Her acrobatic maneuvers promise a thrilling, fresh combat experience, a departure from Geralt's stoic, grounded approach.

The Witcher 4's shift to Ciri as the lead character suggests a more fluid and fast-paced combat system, reflecting her unique abilities and personality. As CD Projekt RED unveils further details, excitement builds. Will Ciri's gameplay surpass Geralt's legendary status? Only time will tell.
