New World of Warcraft Video Explains Feast of Winter Veil Lore

World of Warcraft's Festive Lore: A Look at the Feast of Winter Veil

The annual Feast of Winter Veil in World of Warcraft mirrors our real-world Christmas celebrations, offering players special rewards and new additions each year. A recently released lore video, a collaboration with PlatinumWoW, delves into the holiday's rich history within Azeroth.

From its in-game origins to the infamous Metzen the Reindeer kidnappings, Winter Veil boasts a long and entertaining tradition. The event, WoW's version of Christmas, features unique rewards and activities, regularly introducing collectible items, gold, and more.

This new video, narrated by PlatinumWoW, explores the holiday's roots: the Dwarven legend of Greatfather Winter, a Titan-forged giant leaving snowy trails; and the Tauren's traditions of spiritual reflection, renewal, and gratitude to the Earthmother. The video also highlights the rise of Smokeywood Pastures, a Goblin enterprise that commercialized Winter Veil, reflecting real-world Christmas commercialization.

The Legend of Metzen the Reindeer

No Winter Veil lore video is complete without mentioning Metzen the Reindeer, named after former Warcraft creative director Chris Metzen. This unfortunate reindeer has endured three separate kidnappings: by pirates and Dark Iron dwarves in Classic WoW, and by the Grinch in the current game. The video humorously concludes with Metzen expressing gratitude in Thrall's voice (a fitting tribute, as Metzen voiced the Orc Shaman).

This isn't PlatinumWoW's first collaboration with Blizzard. Past projects include lore explorations of Nerubians, Vrykul, and the Scourge (Wrath of the Lich King Classic), World Trees and Blackrock Depths (modern WoW), and guides for events like Season of Discovery and Plunderstorm. Blizzard's recent collaborations also include Taliesin & Evitel's advice for returning Dragonflight players and Hurricane's stunning cinematic trailers for WoW Classic.

Players can still participate in the Feast of Winter Veil until January 5, 2024. This year's highlights include the tamable Dreaming Festive Reindeer for Hunters, new holiday transmogs, and the Grunch pet for all players. Don't forget to check under the tree in Orgrimmar or Stormwind for a special Winter Veil gift!
