Sony Unveils teamLFG: New PlayStation Studio from Bungie, Crafting Team-Based Action Game

Sony has announced the formation of a new PlayStation studio called teamLFG, which has teased its debut game. In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, revealed that teamLFG originated from Bungie, the developer behind Destiny and Marathon. The studio is currently working on an "ambitious" incubation project that Hulst is "very excited about."

The name teamLFG stands for 'Looking For Group,' a term popular in online gaming communities, indicating that social gaming will be a key focus for the studio. Their first game is described as a team-based action game, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." The game will feature a lighthearted, comedic world set in a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.

"We are driven by a mission to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging," teamLFG stated. The studio aims to foster an environment where players feel excited to log on and find their teammates already online, recognize familiar names, and create memorable moments that become the stuff of legends within the game. They emphasized the importance of immersive multiplayer worlds that players can learn, play, and master over countless hours.

"We want to build our games with our communities, inviting players to be a part of our development process through early access playtests. It’s critical that we stay nimble enough to react to player feedback, not just in our lead-up to launch, but throughout live service as we continue to grow the game and community for years to come," the team added.

teamLFG's game emerged from an incubation project at Bungie, which was spun off amid significant layoffs in 2023 and 2024. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs that affected 100 employees in November 2023 and another 220 in 2024, with 155 employees being integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during this period that the incubation project, now known as teamLFG's debut game, was announced.

Last year, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in pushing for improvements to Destiny 2. Since then, Bungie has fully revealed their extraction shooter, Marathon, and confirmed the roadmap for Destiny 2's future. However, there are no plans for Destiny 3, and a spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
