The Last of Us season 2 has been given a thrilling new trailer at Sony’s CES 2025 presentation, confirming its premiere in April on HBO. This live-action series, which adapts Naughty Dog's acclaimed 2013 post-apocalyptic game, will delve into the events of the 2020 sequel, The Last of Us Part 2. HBO's adaptation has already earned acclaim as one of the finest video game adaptations, alongside shows like Arcane and Fallout, and season 2 is poised to uphold this standard of excellence.
Co-creator Craig Mazin has hinted that the story of Part 2 might be spread across three seasons, given the complexity and depth of the narrative. With season 2 comprising only seven episodes, compared to the nine in the first season, HBO is expected to take creative liberties to enrich the storyline and character development. This includes a unique therapy-like session for Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal), a scene not present in the original game.
The CES 2025 trailer, lasting just over a minute, offers a mix of action-packed and emotionally charged moments from the game. The trailer ends with a striking visual of a red flare illuminating the premiere month of April. While HBO had previously announced a Spring 2025 release window, narrowing it down to March through June, the new trailer has now confirmed the April premiere, though an exact date remains undisclosed.
Fans have been meticulously analyzing the new trailer, despite much of the footage being recycled from the initial trailer released last year. New scenes feature Kaitlyn Dever's Abby Anderson and the iconic dance sequence between Dina (Isabela Merced) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey). The trailer's opening shot, with its alarming tone, evokes powerful memories for gamers. Meanwhile, the community speculates on the role of Catherine O’Hara in the upcoming season, while appreciating the Roman numeral styling reminiscent of Naughty Dog’s sequel.
In addition to the intrigue surrounding O’Hara’s character, fans have spotted hints of another new cast member for season 2. Season 1 introduced original characters like Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey), Perry (Jeffrey Pierce), Florence (Elaine Miles), and Marlon (Graham Greene). However, fans are also eager to see familiar faces from Part 2, such as Jesse (Young Mazino), and the return of Jeffrey Wright as Isaac Dixon, a role he voiced in the game.
