Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons: Rumors of Exciting Enhancements

Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice, Suggests New Evidence

Recent circumstantial evidence hints at a surprising new feature for the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: the ability to function as computer mice. While the practicality of this mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024. In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape, described as "mouse soles," intended for attachment to "game console handles." This suggests the Switch 2 Joy-Cons might incorporate mouse-like functionality.

LiC identified two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, not found in public component databases. This implies they are new, unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, seems large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handhelds

While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented in handheld gaming. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already offers this feature with its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to improve its gliding action. The Legion GO also features magnetic rails for attaching controllers—a feature also rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity suggests potential design parallels between the two devices.
