MageTrain: Fast-Paced Pixel Roguelike Now on Android

Tidepool Games has launched an exciting new fast-paced pixel art roguelike for Android titled MageTrain. Fans of Nimble Quest will find a familiar vibe here, as MageTrain takes clear inspiration from the classic title while adding its own unique twist.

What’s MageTrain Like?

MageTrain blends elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes into one thrilling gameplay loop. You control a chain of heroes that follow you in a line—just like a snake—each automatically attacking as you maneuver through a dynamic arena.

Your main task is to strategically manage your team's positioning while avoiding collisions with enemies and obstacles. You decide who leads the charge and who supports from behind, as each hero’s abilities change depending on their position in the “train.”

At launch, there are nine distinct heroes to choose from—including one who throws birds—each offering different skills based on whether they’re leading or trailing. The game features eight unique dungeons, 28 enemy types, and 30 powerful skills to enhance your squad. Along the way, you’ll collect gold and power-ups to boost your chances of survival.

With its roguelike design, every run feels fresh. You’ll navigate branching paths, pick upgrades, and aim to survive as long as possible. Think Slay the Spire meets FTL: no fixed levels, no save points, and one life to push as far as you can. Crash into the wrong enemy or get overwhelmed, and it’s back to the start.

It Isn’t Slow-Paced

One of MageTrain’s strongest points is how quickly you improve with each attempt—even if you lose. Over time, you'll learn when to play defensively, when to go all-out, and when just surviving a little longer makes all the difference.
