Gaming Mouse Malfunction Sparks Fire, Endangering Home

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 19,2025

A redditor's gaming mouse spontaneously combusted, nearly causing a house fire. The user, u/lommelinn, reported waking to the smell of smoke and discovering their Gigabyte M6880X mouse engulfed in flames. The incident occurred while their PC was in sleep mode.

The resulting damage is significant, with the mouse's top casing completely melted and scorch marks on the desk and mousepad. Images shared online show the extent of the damage. The cause remains unclear, especially considering the mouse is a wired, optical model with no internal battery and a low power draw (5V at 0.5A via USB 2.0). Only the top casing was severely affected, adding to the mystery.

Gigabyte has acknowledged the incident and launched an investigation, contacting the user to offer support. In a statement, they emphasized customer safety as their top priority.

u/lommelinn expressed astonishment, noting their PC was in sleep mode and that subsequent voltage checks on the USB port revealed no issues. The unexpected nature of the event underscores the potential for unforeseen hardware failures, even in seemingly innocuous devices.
