Dune: Awakening's studio, Funcom, is gearing up for a potentially crowded launch as they prepare for a large-scale beta this weekend. Dive into the details to discover Funcom’s server strategies and what fans can look forward to.
As the release of Dune: Awakening approaches, Funcom is confident in handling a crowded launch scheduled for June. In a Steam post dated May 7, they addressed key concerns following the first closed beta, detailing the game's server infrastructure and large-scale multiplayer features.
At the outset, players will select a server as their home base. Each server is part of a World, which consists of at least 20 servers, allowing players to interact with others across their World.
Concerns about server load and queue times have been noted by fans. Funcom anticipates high traffic at launch, with some servers reaching capacity. They reassured players by stating that "thousands of servers will be grouped into hundreds of Worlds at launch."
Funcom clarified, "While a Hagga Basin server can support 40 concurrent players, daily population fluctuations allow it to accommodate several hundred choosing it as their home." The studio rigorously tested this during the closed beta and has systems in place to limit new character creation on overly popular servers, reducing the likelihood of servers reaching full capacity.
Dune: Awakening emphasizes its large-scale multiplayer mechanics but remains enjoyable for solo players as well. While players enter a multiplayer environment, they can explore Arrakis alone. Single-player and private servers won't be available at launch but are planned for post-launch updates.
Before the official launch, a large-scale beta weekend is set to provide players with a taste of what's to come. Funcom shared more details in a post on the Dune: Awakening official website on May 8.
To participate in the beta weekend, fans can wishlist and request access on the game's Steam page, sign up on the official website, or secure an access code at the Global LAN party on May 10.
The beta weekend will run from May 9 to May 12. Check the timetable below to see when the stream starts in your region:
The beta will feature the first 20-25 hours of gameplay, covering early to mid-game stages. It includes the CHOAM building set, Hagga Basin South region, Eastern and Western Vermillius Gap Region, access to the Sandbike, early and mid-game combat, and segments of Act I of the story. Importantly, Funcom confirmed that any progress made during the beta weekend will not carry over to the full game.
Dune: Awakening is slated for release on June 10, 2025, for PC, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions coming at a later, yet-to-be-announced date. Stay updated with the latest news by checking out our related article below!
