RuneScape: Dragonwilds has taken the gaming world by storm with its unexpected early access launch, coming just weeks after its initial teaser. Dive in to uncover the details of this early access phase and what's in store for players.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds shocked fans with a surprise announcement during its early access livestream on April 16. Developer Jagex revealed that the game is now accessible via early access on Steam, a mere few weeks following the release of its first trailer.
The announcement left fans astounded, especially since the game was only available for wishlisting on Steam starting April 1, with its first gameplay teaser unveiled on April 2. Although the game was first announced in 2022, it wasn't until late 2024 that Jagex began accepting sign-ups for alpha testing of this new survival game set in the RuneScape universe. The official reveal of RuneScape: Dragonwilds came on March 31, 2025.
The developers are targeting an official release for Dragonwilds in early 2026. They emphasized their commitment to delivering a polished experience, stating, "We want to spend the time to get everything right to ensure our players receive a complete, satisfying experience that you’ll want to revisit with friends time and again."
Jagex's Executive Producer, Jesse America, highlighted that Dragonwilds offers a fresh take on the RuneScape experience, tailored for the franchise's dedicated fans. He noted that the early access phase marks the beginning of their development journey, saying, "Throughout Early Access, we’ll regularly update the game with new content and features, all while attentively listening to our community to create an iconic open world survival crafting game beloved by both our biggest RuneScape fans and newcomers."
Jagex has shared an exciting early access roadmap, outlining what players can anticipate during this phase. The highlight is the introduction of a new region, Fellhollow, which teeters between life and death, ruled by the soul-eater dragon Imaru. This region is influenced by Ashenfall's wild anima and the cursed energy of the Underworld. Players will be joined by the iconic RuneScape character, Death, as they explore new quests, delve into deeper lore, and equip new gear, all set to an original soundtrack. Additionally, new skills in magic, ranged, and farming will be introduced.
The game will also feature new enemy types, such as Lesser Dragons, along with dragon slayer gear, a hardcore mode, and a creative mode. While specific release dates for these updates are not yet set, Jagex assures players that ongoing improvements will be a constant focus.
Players who jump into Dragonwilds during its early access period will be rewarded with exclusive in-game items. As detailed on the game's Steam page, "Early Adopters" will receive:
Currently, RuneScape: Dragonwilds is available for early access on PC at $29.99. Jagex has confirmed that the price will increase upon the game's full release. During the early access phase, all updates will be provided at no additional cost, although future post-launch content may be offered as paid DLC.
