Dev Sentenced to 3 Years, Pauses Work on Steam FPS Game

Summary

  • Development of the Steam FPS Fortune's Run has been halted due to the creator's 3-year prison sentence.
  • The game is now in early access limbo.

Fans of the Steam FPS Fortune's Run are facing a disheartening update: the game's development has been paused due to its sole creator, Dizzie, being sentenced to three years in prison. Unlike typical delays caused by financial or technical issues, this unique situation leaves Fortune's Run in a state of uncertainty.

Before this unexpected news, Fortune's Run had garnered a "Very Positive" rating on Steam, celebrated for its nostalgic art style and innovative gameplay, even in its early access phase. However, fans will need to wait until Dizzie's release for any further updates. While games like Half-Life 2 have overcome similar development challenges, the future of Fortune's Run remains unclear.

Dizzie announced their prison sentence on January 14 via a Steam update, revealing that the crime occurred before they began working on Fortune's Run. They described themselves as "a very violent person" during that time. This case isn't isolated; other gaming personalities, such as streamer Johnny Somali, have also faced legal issues recently, though a prison sentence directly impacting game development is rare.

Progress on Fortune's Run Won't Continue Until Developer Is Released From Prison

Fortune's Run initially had another team member who departed after a botched surgery and subsequently lost interest in game development. With Dizzie as the only developer left, the project will be on hold until their release from prison in February 2025. The game's Steam page still lists an early access exit target of 2026, but meeting this deadline now seems improbable. However, considering games like Satisfactory took over five years to leave early access, a three-year delay isn't unprecedented in the indie game world.

Dizzie remains optimistic about completing the game post-release and assures fans they can continue playing the current version until then. In the meantime, other early access shooters on Steam can help fill the gap until Dizzie resumes work on Fortune's Run.
