Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Engaging Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a daunting endeavor. In my experience, it took over an hour to defeat him, highlighting the challenge he presents. However, there are compelling reasons to face him. Firstly, defeating Lu Bu earns you bragging rights—a true badge of honor among players. Secondly, depending on your allegiance to Shu or Wei, you may be forced to confront him during the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4. Lastly, triumphing over him at the Battle of Hulao Gate not only grants you the "The Strongest" trophy but also unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd, in the post-game, providing strong incentives to challenge him.

Lu Bu’s First Phase

Preparation is key before facing Lu Bu. Equip a weapon like a sword that can deliver multiple hits and stagger him. Choose Battle Arts that are quick to activate, require minimal Bravery, and have a wide range. In my battle, I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories that boost your health and defense, such as Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell, are essential as Lu Bu's attacks can quickly deplete your health. Additionally, select a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be crucial for maintaining your offensive capabilities.

Initially, Lu Bu will be mounted on his horse, Red Hare. This phase involves him charging around the battlefield. He's swift, but he pauses occasionally, providing windows to attack with your Battle Arts before retreating. His attacks have limited area of effect, except for Red Hare's aerial crash. Once his health drops to 80%, Lu Bu dismounts, and the real battle begins.

Lu Bu’s Second Phase

Lu Bu grabbing the Wanderer in Dynasty Warriors: OriginsOn foot, Lu Bu becomes even more aggressive. His rapid movements and attacks are enhanced by a red aura, making him immune to staggering. He often charges in sets of three, and if he charges without his spear, he's attempting a grab that can severely damage your health—evade these moves promptly.

His most lethal move is signaled by an orange glow, leading to a barrage of three massive arrows fired thrice, capable of juggling and devastating your health. To counter this, use a long-range Battle Art like Absconding Slash. Close-quarters Battle Arts like Palm Strike are too risky here. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergency invincibility, which can be a lifesaver if you misjudge a dodge or get caught in a combo.

Lu Bu is surprisingly vulnerable to juggling in this phase. Continuous attacks can quickly charge your Battle Arts and deplete his Fortitude meter. Stay close to react swiftly to his moves, and remember, evasion is your best defense.

Lu Bu’s Final Phase

When Lu Bu's health is sufficiently reduced, he enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. He becomes unstoppable, launching relentless attacks. Your objective is to break his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use all your remaining resources—activate Musou attacks, deploy Battle Arts, and strike with everything you've got. If he completes his Musou attack, he'll immediately restart it, forcing you to repeat the phase. Breaking his Fortitude here is your key to victory.

And that’s how to defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is now available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
