"Assassin’s Creed Shadows Hits 1 Million Players on Launch Day: Ubisoft"

Author:Kristen Update:May 28,2025
PlayAssassin’s Creed Shadows shattered expectations by welcoming over 1 million players on its launch day, Ubisoft proudly announced. The game hit digital shelves on March 20, gracing PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms. Just shy of 4 p.m. local time in Canada, Ubisoft took to social media to celebrate this milestone.

“Not even 4 p.m. here in Canada, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows has already surpassed 1 million players!” Ubisoft expressed. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embarking on this journey through Feudal Japan with us. We couldn’t be more thrilled to begin this adventure alongside you!”

While crossing the 1 million player threshold on launch day is undeniably impressive, Ubisoft has yet to disclose specific sales figures or targets, making it challenging to assess overall success. What we do know is that the game is currently the top-earning title on Steam globally, based on Valve’s revenue-driven charts.

Early Steam data indicates a peak concurrent player count of 41,412 on launch day. As we move into the game’s first weekend, this figure is anticipated to rise. No sales data has been released by Sony or Microsoft.

To put this into perspective, BioWare’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which launched on Steam on October 31, 2024, reached a peak of 70,414 concurrent players on the same platform.

The stakes were high for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Following several delays and the commercial underperformance of last year’s Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft faced considerable challenges. In recent months, the company has dealt with numerous setbacks, including layoffs, studio closures, and canceled projects.

Controversies have also surrounded the game, particularly in Japan. Recently, IGN reported that Ubisoft quietly released a day-one patch addressing concerns raised by some Japanese politicians regarding in-game depictions of temples and shrines. During a parliamentary session, Japanese politician Hiroyuki Kada questioned the game’s content, prompting Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to respond.

User feedback on Steam paints a glowing picture of the game, with a “Very Positive” review rating based on nearly 4,000 reviews, 82% of which are positive. IGN awarded the game an 8/10, praising its refined open-world mechanics. The review noted, “By sharpening the edges of its existing systems, Assassin’s Creed Shadows delivers one of the best iterations of the franchise’s hallmark style.”

In other developments, Ubisoft’s founding Guillemot family and major shareholders are reportedly in talks with Chinese tech giant Tencent and other potential investors about a possible buyout, aiming to retain control.
