April Fools’ Day has come and gone, but one joke from the team behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 might just stick in the minds of fans for a while longer.
On April 1st, the game’s publisher, Focus Entertainment, made a cheeky announcement regarding the release of the new Chaplain class as DLC.
“In story mode, swap out Titus for The Chaplain and experience the game as a true Codex-compliant Ultramarine,” they declared—likely with a grin behind their screens.
This “DLC” was said to add the Chaplain as a playable character in story mode, along with an ‘Enhanced Dialogue System.’ In this fictional update, the Chaplain would remind everyone every five minutes that “the Codex Astartes does not support this action,” or “I’m telling the Inquisition.”
The joke even included a special ability called Discipline, which involved reporting any minor deviations from protocol in exchange for a 5% discipline bonus (but at the cost of a -20% brotherhood bonus).
The humor works especially well because anyone who played through Space Marine 2 knows how much the Chaplain already stands out. Throughout the campaign, Chaplain Quintus shadows Titus with unwavering suspicion, constantly on the lookout for heresy—even though Titus repeatedly proves his loyalty to the Imperium, the Ultramarines, and the Emperor himself.
As players battle against Tyranids and the traitorous Thousand Sons, it becomes clear that Titus is something… different. And that’s exactly what makes the Chaplain so suspicious—and so frustrating. He’s like the overzealous school prefect always ready to report you for the smallest infraction. It's safe to say most players don’t have warm feelings toward him.
Over time, the Chaplain has become a meme within the Space Marine community, and this April Fools’ joke leaned into that perfectly. But surprisingly, some fans wouldn’t mind seeing him actually added to the game—if not with those exact abilities, then perhaps as a full-fledged warrior-priest dedicated to the veneration of the Emperor.
“This would actually go hard if this was real,” wrote Reddit user ResidentDrama9739 on the Space Marine subreddit, echoing the sentiment of many fans buzzing about the idea.
Interestingly, Space Marine 2 is set to receive a new class soon. While Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive haven't revealed details yet, speculation is running high. Many believe it will be the Apothecary—the closest thing Space Marines have to a medic. Others are hoping for the Librarian, bringing powerful warp-based abilities into the fray. Does the Chaplain’s humorous debut rule him out? Not necessarily.
Meanwhile, development of Space Marine 3 has already begun, but Space Marine 2 still has plenty of content planned for the coming months. Patch 7 is scheduled for mid-April, and beyond that, players can look forward to a new class, fresh PvE operations, and new melee weapons.
