Melee seinen Namen vom Kernkonzept der Spieleserie hat: „Freunde, die kleine Reibungen lösen.“ Laut Masahiro Sakurai war auch der verstorbene ehemalige Nintendo-Präsident Satoru Iwata an der Namensgebung von Super Smash Bros.
