Scalebound galt als eines der ehrgeizigsten Actionprojekte der Spielebranche – eine Mischung aus hochintensiven Kämpfen, dynamischer Musikuntermalung und revolutionären Drache-Gefährten-Mechaniken. Das unglückliche Xbox-One-Exklusivspiel erzeugte beispiellosen Hype, bevor es unveröffentlicht verschwand. Nach seiner ersten Vorstellung 2014 zog Microsoft 2017 nach jahrelangen Entwicklungsproblemen offiziell den Stecker.

Entwickler-Archive wecken neue Hoffnung

Clovers Inc. veröffentlichte kürzlich Archivaufnahmen von Regisseur Hideki Kamiya, der mit seinem Team Scalebound-Gameplay bespricht. Das Video zeigt den PlatinumGames-Veteranen im nostalgischen Austausch über die Projektentwicklung, wobei er trotz der Absetzung nachhaltigen Stolz auf die Arbeit bekundet. Kamiya befeuerte die Spekulationen, indem er das Material mit einer direkten Herausforderung retweetete: „Komm schon, Phil, lass uns das durchziehen!“ – ein klarer Appell an Xbox-Chef Phil Spencer.

Dies ist nicht Kamiyas erster Versuch, das Projekt wiederzubeleben. 2022 äußerte er öffentlich Interesse daran, mit Microsoft über eine mögliche Wiederaufnahme von Scalebound zu verhandeln. Gerüchte gewannen Anfang 2023 an Fahrt, als mehrere Insider auf mögliche Neuauflagen hindeuteten, obwohl Microsoft sich bedeckt hielt.

Als Game Watch nach dem Status von Scalebound fragte, antwortete Spencer nur mit einem rätselhaften Lächeln und der koketten Bemerkung: „Derzeit habe ich nichts hinzuzufügen.“

Der lange Weg zur möglichen Wiederbelebung

Selbst mit Microsofts Zustimmung sollten Fans keine unmittelbaren Ergebnisse erwarten. Kamiyas aktueller Fokus liegt auf der Wiederbelebung von Okami in seinem Studio Clovers Inc. Jede Scalebound-Wiederaufnahme müsste warten, bis diese Verpflichtungen abgeschlossen sind.

Doch das anhaltende Interesse von Entwicklern und Fans hält die Hoffnung am Leben. Sieben Jahre nach der Absetzung könnte dieser Drache noch Feuer im Bauch haben – was darauf hindeutet, dass Spieler letztendlich doch noch die phönixgleiche Wiedergeburt des berüchtigtsten abgesetzten Exklusivspiels miterleben könnten.
