Starfield Ambitions Soar, Release Expected Years from Now

Speculation about a Starfield sequel is already swirling, even though the original game only launched in 2023. While Bethesda remains tight-lipped, a former developer has offered some intriguing insights.

Starfield 2: "One Hell of a Game" in the Making?

Former Bethesda lead designer, Bruce Nesmith, a key figure in the creation of Skyrim and Oblivion, boldly predicted that Starfield 2, if developed, will be exceptional. Nesmith, who departed Bethesda in September 2021, believes the groundwork laid by the first Starfield will facilitate a significantly improved sequel. He highlighted the iterative development process seen in previous Bethesda franchises, suggesting that Starfield 2 will build upon its predecessor's foundation, addressing criticisms and incorporating substantial new content. He drew parallels to franchises like Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed, which saw their true potential realized in later installments.

Nesmith's interview with VideoGamer emphasized that Starfield's initial development involved establishing new systems and technologies "from the ground up." He anticipates Starfield 2 will leverage these existing assets, enabling the developers to focus on enhancing gameplay and refining existing mechanics.

A Long Wait Ahead: Starfield 2 Release Date Remains Uncertain

Starfield's initial reception was mixed, with critiques focusing on pacing and content. However, Bethesda's commitment to establishing Starfield as a major franchise alongside The Elder Scrolls and Fallout is evident. Bethesda's Director, Todd Howard, confirmed plans for annual story expansions for "hopefully a very long time," demonstrating a long-term vision for the franchise.

However, Bethesda's history of lengthy development cycles suggests a significant wait for Starfield 2. The Elder Scrolls VI, in pre-production since 2018, is still in its early stages, according to Bethesda's head of publishing. With Fallout 5 slated to follow The Elder Scrolls VI, a Starfield sequel likely won't arrive until the mid-2030s. This timeline aligns with Xbox's Phil Spencer's 2023 statement indicating The Elder Scrolls VI is at least five years away.

Despite the extended timeframe, fans can find solace in Bethesda's continued support for Starfield. The recent release of the "Shattered Space" DLC addresses some initial concerns, and more DLC is planned. While the prospect of Starfield 2 remains speculative for now, the future of the franchise appears bright.
